Many people consider a big motor on the car useless to drive normally on the streets. But those same people would not want to give their V8 engine under the hood on a 4 cylinder in any form. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

I am not referring to cars with a high capacity of 3000 cmc strictly, nor to engines that are only in V. I am referring to all engines that we can say in general that are big. I mean high power, more cylinders, high tax, high consumption, very good torque.

But why buy a car with a big engine?

1. Engine sound

Without a doubt, many people want a V8 or a V12 for its unique sound that no turbocharged car can have today. That classic sound of muscle, brute force, 4-wheeled animal. Not for nothing, many powerful car owners also turn them on, to hear the symphony of cylinders singing in unison. After all, you buy a big car engine because you like it from different points of view. And the sound is one of them.

2. Acceleration

Even if all the really powerful cars are supercharged nowadays, it is clear that a V6-V12 engine is something special. It has torque from low speed, and this is also felt in acceleration. In fact, any engine with more than 4 pistons has high power, high torque and accelerates very violently. After all, who doesn’t like serious acceleration? You are lying to yourself when you say that you do not need high power when you accelerate and feel like you will stick to the chair. Then, you will definitely smile involuntarily. 🙂

3. Safety

It is obvious that a powerful car engine is safer than a low power one. For example, when you want to get in front of a truck and you have only 75 hp, you will do it with a little bit of fear … So, you have to be careful that nobody is on the counter for a long distance. If you have under the hood an engine with 300 hp, you will pass the front car with ease. Not only that, a performance car has serious brakes and much better stability than an average one?

4. Big car engines do not feel the weight

Generally, when you fill a 1.6 engine for example with 5 people plus luggage and go to a mountain area, on the coil, the 1.6 it barely pulls, and this is quite annoying. Not in a car with a V6 engine up, which has lots of torque and, no matter how much you load it, you barely feel any difference. As well as when it comes to removing another car stuck in the mud, or climbing a steep ramp, especially in winter when it slides.

5. Increased reliability

A simple but big engine will always be much more reliable than a turbocharged one. And a V8 engine will be much more reliable than a 4-piston. Firstly, because it has fewer moving parts that can break, such as a turbine, waste-gate, hose, sensors or intercooler. Secondly, because big engines have torque at low RPM will never be revved so much like the small ones. So, wear over time will be minimal. Not for nothing, US citizens still have on the streets muscle-cars with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock that works like new.

6. Better equipment

All cars with big engines are equipped with much better-equipped from the factory, with more options, than those with small engines. This can be seen even today, those who still sell V6 or V8 cars, these engines are offered only with the top equipment. 7. Cars with big engines are better driven

Any performance car gives the driver a better driving experience. It has a lot of power, good brakes, precise steering, and rigid suspensions that offer increased maneuverability. Besides, a large motor car offers infinitely greater driving pleasure.

1. Increased fuel consumption

Where does the greater power come from? Of course, fuel, which consumes more. As anyone knows that a large engine is stronger than a 4-cylinder, anyone knows that they are more thirsty. The fuel set of a 12-cylinder engine is different than a 4-cylinder engine, right?

But a solution to this problem is represented by gas installations (LPG). Even if fuels have increased, gas is much cheaper than gasoline.

Therefore, a big engine can also be economical, keeping its advantages above.

2. In some cases higher fees

This may indeed be a problem. The annual tax can be higher depending on the country where you are, for a car that has over 6000 cmc, the taxes can be very high.

3. Pollution

It is a disadvantage that does not interest anyone, unfortunately … I mean I have not heard anyone until now say: I do not buy a car with 4.2 engine because it pollutes a lot! But whoever is interested, must know that a large engine pollutes significantly more.

4. More expensive maintenance

Maintaining a big engine car is definitely more expensive. So, for example, if we want to change the spark plugs, the price paid for 12 pieces is significantly higher than the price paid for 4 pieces… As well as the quantity of oil, coolant, gaskets, hoses, etc. A larger number of cylinders means big expenses, as is normal.

The alternatives of a small supercharged engine

Perhaps the biggest problem with big engines is small engines that have the same power, or higher, being supercharged. Take for example an Audi 1.8 Turbo engine, which produces 220 hp. The same power has a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.2 V8 engine …

Obviously, the torque is different, but in the segment of small and medium-sized cars (except for SUVs), big engines have lost a lot of ground. For example, a Subaru Impreza STI performs much better than most cars with V8 or even larger engines. That’s because the small 2.0-liter engine has a large turbine, which increases its power to about 300 horsepower. This is why an ideal option would be a small, turbocharged engine: low taxes, high power.
